Ross Gammon’s Family History Website

This is the website where I record the results of the reasearch into my family history and also that of my wife's. I will keep the source of the website on Github so that other family members can contribute to the website, and so that my son can fork it and carry on with it when he becomes interested, or when I am gone.

ANZAC Day 2020

Yesterday whilst in Coronavirus lockdown, I enjoyed watching the Music from the Home Front broadcast live-streamed on the internet. It was great to see some of my
favourite Australian musicans and bands performing from their home studios which looked a lot like mine (except tidier, and they had more gear!). It was great to take part in remembering the great sacrifices that
Australian and New Zealand soldiers made and also to reflect on the work that all of the people are doing on our behalf in service of the people whilst fighting this modern day war against a virus. Hearing
James Morrison playing the bugle reminded me of the time that I played the Last Post at an ANZAC Day ceremony in Melbourne (Box Hill I think) all those years ago. James did a much better job!

This morning, I found that my Mum had posted on Facebook about two brothers of my Great Grandmother, Gladys Annie Veronica, that had died in the First World War.
Robert Bethel died on the 14th August 1915 and is remembered at the 7th Field Ambulance Cemetery in Gallipoli.
Wilfred Michael Bethel died on the 7th August 1916 and is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial in the Somme, Northern France. I know that
other branches of the family (including on my Dad’s side) also lost family members during the World Wars. I can’t believe that I haven’t been to visit these places whilst I have been living in Europe.

Francis Gammon (b.1899) Page Added

Over the last few months, when I had the chance, I tidied up my Grandfather and Grandmother’s data in my Gramps Family Tree database. Today, I managed to finish the page for my Grandad, Francis Gammon (b. 1899).

Most of the early information about my grandparents comes from the Government Record Office (GRO) in England and the Scotlands People website. The more recent information about their lives in Australia comes from an interview with Dad when he came to Europe for my wedding in 2005.

Family Trees Uploaded

It has been a long time since I worked on my family tree in Gramps, and I can see I have a lot of tidying up to do. Anyway, resurrecting my old website reminded me that I should extract the work as it stands, and publish it on my website using the Narrative Web Report in Gramps.

My Family Tree can be found here. It is missing an explanation of where the data comes from and how to find the person you want, but I will work on that later.

I have also linked to the Family Tree page for for every person covered in the main Jekyll website. That way, after reading about that person, you can go to the Family tree and then follow the links to other family members. Enjoy!

Welcome to my new Jekyll based Family History website!

A long time ago, when I was using Windows and busy researching my Family History, I created this website using a product called Netobjects Fusion. Back in 2010, I switched to using Linux and was no longer able to edit the website.

Finally, I have converted the website to Jekyll. This allows me to edit the website on my Linux computers, and store it in my favourite version control system (git) online at Github. This has the added advantage that other family members can access the source, and contribute information and changes using well documented processes. It also means that once I am no longer, somebody can fork the repository, push it to a different server on the internet, and carry on publishing further research.

At the moment, I am using a very plain theme. I will investigate a prettier theme at some point, and switch to that. Enjoy!
